Formerly a Game Reserve since 1951, Mkomazi was announced a National Park from 2008. Located to the east of Pare Mountains near Same town, about 190kms from Arusha.To the west lies Tsavo National park, northwest lies kilimanjaro and to the south Pare and Usambara mountains. Umba River on Mkomazi’s south eastern border and other water holes keep the park is brimming with small and large mammals.
Wildlife Highlights
In Mkomazi you can be able to see silver backed jackal, lion, cheetah, leopard, giraffe, buffalo, elephant and zebra, with the rare gerenuk, lesser kudu and fringe-eared oryx easily sighted as well as over 400 species of birds.
There is a sanctuary for the endangered black rhino.The Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary has attained international renown for rehabilitating rhino, and it offers viewing and educational opportunities for visitors.

Game drives, walking safaris, mountain hikes and bird watching and visit Mkomazi Rhino sanctuary.
When to go:
June-September is the best for large mammal and bird watching.
A visit to Mkomazi can be planned as a part of combination safari involving a visit to Northern circuit or as an extension to a safari after a Kilimanjaro climb.
